FAQs

ARE BOTH THE LOCAL AND NATIONAL LEVELS DEMOCRATIC IN THEIR DECISION MAKING?

Are important issues and decisions determined by the entire group membership or are all decisions made by one or two people? Does each member feel that their voices are being heard? Democracy is the basis of our country and our society and it should also be something you look for in a group situation at both the local and national level. Yes, it is terrific when one person steps up to the plate, takes initiative and is inspirational but it takes the entire group to accomplish great achievements and effectively reach short and long term goals.

Diva Angels, Inc. encourages democracy whenever feasible and possible. Taking a vote on important issues is essential under our organization.

Read these 8 questions before you join any riding organization. It will help alleviate surprises and frustration down the line and assist you in getting the most enjoyment out of your group.

ARE BOTH THE LOCAL AND NATIONAL LEVELS RECEPTIVE TO NEW IDEAS?

Albert Einstein had many great ideas but if we stopped with him we would not have the Internet, cell phones and other amazingly useful and "must have" items in our world right now. New ideas pop up each day and it is important that not only your local board of directors but the national directors and officers as well be receptive to members\' ideas. Because as we know, that is where our future comes from. If there is a mindset of "THIS IS THE WAY IT IS NO MATTER WHAT" when it comes to group rules and ideas then they are missing out on a great opportunity for growth and improvement in the biking world.

Diva Angels, Inc. ABSOLUTELY encourages and welcomes new ideas. They are the groundwork for our future especially at this early stage in women\'s biking.

CAN I ATTEND A MEETING FIRST BEFORE JOINING TO GET A FEEL FOR THE MEMBERSHIP, GROUP ATMOSPHERE, STRUCTURE AND CAMARADERIE?

Statistics show that first impressions are made within the first 15 seconds of meeting someone and after that it is difficult to change even if that impression is incorrect. The same holds true in many other circumstances including attending group meetings. You can get an instant "feel" for the group usually after being there for just a short while and your mind is usually made up not long thereafter. It is important to attend a meeting first before you join. Go with your instincts..if it "feels good" run with it, if it "feels bad" run away from it.

Diva Angels, Inc. meetings at both the local and national levels are always open. Coming to a meeting first before joining is always recommended and encouraged and members and guests are welcome.

WHAT ACTIVITIES HAS YOUR LOCAL CHAPTER PARTICIPATED IN AND WHAT PLANS DO THEY HAVE FOR THE FUTURE?

Get a list of past, present and future planned activities to see if they interest you. Also, when conducting fundraising events find out which charities they support and why. Find out if there are any activities at the national level to participate in as well for instance national conventions, meetings, etc.

Diva Angels, Inc. activities since 2005 include poker runs, weekly and monthly rides and events, individual chapter as well as joint chapter rides along with unique and fun activities such as jewelry and slumber parties! We are always eager and receptive to new activity ideas and always looking for new ways to have fun together as well as raise money for worthy causes.

WHAT LEVEL OF SUPPORT DOES YOUR LOCAL AND NATIONAL ORGANIZATION GIVE TO EACH MEMBER?

As in marriages, personal relationships, businesses and most walks of life, the means of communication can either make or break a relationship of any kind especially in group situations. It is extremely frustrating if someone is limited solely to e-mail correspondence or corresponding through a general web site or a general telephone number with an answering machine as the only means to get a response when you have a question or concern. In that case if the e-mail or call sent is not answered at all, not answered in a timely fashion or answered in a way that requires more questions to understand, the member is left frustrated and builds up feelings over time that their thoughts are either not being heard at all, not seen as important or not being responded to in a satisfactory manor. The most effective forms of communication are through several methods simultaneously: an efficient e-mail system with timely and accurate responses, direct telephone exchanges, meetings, events and group open discussions at both the local and national level. Local members should for the most part have all methods available to them and at least all officers and directors of the local chapter should have these methods available at the national level as well. Organizations with closed meetings and limited and restricted communication to their members and chapters will eventually produce frustration within the membership themselves. All members within an organization at both the local and national level want to feel that their voices are being heard and they are appreciated as members.

Diva Angels, Inc. believes in communication and have available a combination of sources including direct phone numbers and e-mail addresses of officers, complete phone and e-mail list of all members at the local level, a national web site with e-mail and phone contact information available, monthly meetings that are always open to all members as well as guests and regular activities that encourages group communication and sharing of ideas.

WHAT ARE THE UPFRONT FEES AS WELL AS RENEWAL COSTS AND WHAT DO YOU GET FOR YOUR MONEY?

Most memberships charge an annual fee. Under national organizations that have individual chapters, it is normal to have two fees, one at the national level and one at the local level or one fee that covers both. Renewal fees may vary from original fees so make sure you understand what they are so there are no surprises. Obviously monies received by a nonprofit organization are required by law to be reinvested back in. Organizations for profit are not required to do so and it is up to their board to determine where the money goes. With either type of organization please ask to see in writing proof of where and how their monies have been spent i.e. budgets and complete annual income and expense statements. Also with for profit organizations ask for a disclosure of how much or what percentage has been reinvested back into the organization, how it has been spent and what each chapter and each individual member receives for their membership not only up front but on a continual basis. Knowing where your money is going and the benefit you will receive is important upfront information.

Diva Angels, Inc. national fee is $20 initially to join with a $15 annual renewal fee. Local chapter fees are $15 per year with $15 annual renewal fees.

WHAT METHODS ARE USED FOR COMMUNICATION AT BOTH THE LOCAL CHAPTER AS WELL AS NATIONAL LEVELS?

As in marriages, personal relationships, businesses and most walks of life, the means of communication can either make or break a relationship of any kind especially in group situations. It is extremely frustrating if someone is limited solely to e-mail correspondence or corresponding through a general web site or a general telephone number with an answering machine as the only means to get a response when you have a question or concern. IS THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION SET UP AS PROFIT OR Not for PROFIT ENTITY?

Profit organizations make money from various methods including but not limited to membership and renewal fees, clothing and accessories sales and a variety of activities. The way the money is spent is determined by the corporate officer(s) themselves and no percentage or amount is required to be reinvested back into the organization and can be spent in any way they choose. Hopefully at least a portion of any profit is reinvested back in and benefits are received and felt at each of the local chapter levels in some way.

True nonprofit organizations are defined by individual state statues when filing the corporate articles, for example in Florida under Florida statutes, Chapter 617 or under 501(C)3. Be careful when someone says they are nonprofit but don't have their corporation legally recognized as such by the state they are operating in. Not for profit organizations are required by law to reinvest 100% of their monies back into the organization itself which benefits not only the national level but the individual chapter levels as well. Since most individual chapters are usually set up as nonprofit themselves regardless of national status, they are unable to generate income on their own to invest back into themselves. When the national organization is for profit, the individual chapters can only hope that enough monies are not only reinvested back in at the national level but enough trickles down through to the individual chapter levels who very much rely and could use their support. Also, nonprofit national organizations can usually offer their individual chapters a tax-exempt number under their umbrella, which in turn may allow each chapter to save money on sales tax when purchasing for their upcoming events, meetings & activities. For local chapters which operate under a for profit national organization, each chapter would need to set up their own tax exempt status at their own significant cost and may not be able to even qualify on their own.

Diva Angels, Inc. is set up as a not for profit organization under Florida Statutes 617 and is recognized by the IRS as a not for profit 501(c) (7) organization. Any and all profit received is put back into the organization.
